torture01/15/06

Outraged about our government sponsoring torture?

Wondering how you can help repair the lives of innocent victims?

Feeling like the information you’ve read isn’t the whole story?

Join Susan Burke, a lawyer who is working hard to bring relief and justice to Abu Ghraib torture victims in Iraq, for an informal coffee and talk. Burke will explain what her firm Burke-Pyle LLC, along with the support of the Lierman Trust for Human Rights, is doing to help. Burke has met several times in the Middle East with the tortured Iraqis, and will speak on what her firm has learned about US torture policy at Abu Ghraib. She will give a brief overview of Burke Pyle’s class action suit, and open the floor for questions. Joining Burke will be artist and RISD print faculty Daniel Heyman, whose work has focused on this issue, and a representative from the local anti-war movement.

Learn the truth about torture in Iraq. Find out how you can help.

Informational Meeting
Sunday January 22 |
2-4pm
30 North Main Street, room 212, 2nd floor
Above the RISD Campus Store, on left before the bus tunnel.

The Lierman Trust for Human Rights is a non-profit organization that supports litigation designed to ensure adherence to the rule of law and to promote universal human rights norms around the globe.  The Lierman Trust is currently supporting a class action against the two American corporations – CACI and Titan – whose employees participated in torturing and abusing individuals held in Abu Ghraib and other Iraqi prisons.  Donations to the Trust are tax deductible and will be used for, among other things, retaining physicians to evaluate and treat the torture victims.

This event is being sponsored by Warren Heyman, for more info call 401-781-5034.
